Renewable
energy has always been at the heart of Rupert’s career. At university
he obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering, followed by an MSc in
Renewable Energy Systems Technology. He then joined Wessex Water in
1997, working on renewable energy and the development of sustainability
initiatives. In 2000 he left Wessex to join Arup, where he worked in
the Energy Group, the Building Division, the Sustainability Group and
the Industrial Group. Throughout his time there he worked on renewable
energy projects, both in the UK and overseas, on all main renewable
energy technologies - biomass heating, biomass CHP, anaerobic
digestion, wind power, solar etc. The systems were developed for a
range of different clients, including communities and small to very
large developer clients. Due diligence and project oversight was
also provided for various clients, including lenders and large
developers. In 2010 he set up Wattcraft, a niche energy consultancy. He
is a member of the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group
(IMechE), BSI CEN/ISO Sustainable Bioenergy Committee and STIG
