qualified as an engineer and joined the CEGB, later PowerGen. Between
1981 and 1999 he worked at Connah’s Quay and at the hydro plant at
Rheidol, where he held a range of engineering and safety roles. After
having obtained an IOSH qualification, he became Head of Engineering
and Safety and then the Safety Advisor at Connah’s Quay CCGT Power
Station, where he was in post from construction to operation, setting
up its safety management systems, training requirements and its risk
assessment and auditing systems. He subsequently provided company-wide
advice, training and audit in connection with the development of new
sites for local operators in safety management, policy and procedures
and risk assessment. He advised more widely, dealing specifically with
the safety requirements of Kinetica (a gas company with operations in
London, Killingholme and Tamworth), Tapada (a CCPP in Portugal) and
Paguthan (a CCPP in India). In 1999 he set up his own health and safety
